Going to a new Hairdresser is a bit like going on a first date. You may be a bit nervous or maybe even excited.
There will always be some element of risk involved in seeing someone new, but there are a few things you can do before, during and after the appointment to get the best out of your hairdresser and make sure your experience is memorable for all the right reasons.
Before the appointment
If you are new to an area, websites (like mylocalsalon) are a great way of window shopping and narrowing down the choices and can help finding a stylist that suits you.
A new stylist usually means it could be time for a new hairstyle and maybe even a whole new approach. It’s a great plan to set up a consultation first (they are free of charge) and bounce around some ideas with them.
If you don’t feel like a change of hairstyle, a first visit is also great way to test out how good they are at listening to you and how they are at recreating your existing look.
Go for a light trim before you go for a big change –it’s a great icebreaker and you can decide whether you like the salon set up and you should be able tell how professional the staff are by the way the salon looks and how they interact their existing clients. If there are a lot of smiley faces, great hair on staff and clients, you know you are in the right place.
The Appointment
One of my best tips to clients is to arrive to appointments armed with images of hairstyles they love. Hairdressers by their very nature work better with visuals and this is a great way to let the hairdresser know where you are coming from and what you want to achieve.
Allocate plenty of time so you can relax and not worry about having to rush. Good salons usually give a longer appointment time to new clients so they can do the best job they can. If you are in a hurry, your hairdresser has to be in a hurry
How Was It For You?
Nothing beats a great haircut-especially if it’s new look for you. If everyone goes ‘wow- you look great!’ there is no greater buzz. If you are unsure about your result, call the salon and let them know. All good salons will want to make sure you are happy, and sometimes it takes more than one go to get your look ‘just right’. Nine times out of ten, hairdressers will get your hair spot on the next visit.
